Night School
A lot of people seem to be getting tired of Kevin Hart and his films. Granted, a new Kevin Hart film does seem to pop out often nowadays so I can see why people would have that gripe. However, I don’t mind him or his films. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was greatly entertaining, and I love his pairing with Ice Cube in the Ride Along series. His work does it for me at times. With Night School, we see him pairing with another star who seems to be in everything nowadays, Tiffany Haddish. Their pairing and this film turned out to be much better than I was anticipating.
The film is about a man who recently loses his job on the cusp of proposing to his girlfriend. He hasn’t told her that he never finished high school and realizes he can’t get a good job without one, so he decides to take night classes to get his GED. However, the classes don’t turn out to be a cakewalk like he originally anticipated and he and his eclectic group of classmates must buck down and really strive to get their GED. Along with the two leading stars the film also stars Taran Killam and Rob Riggle.
I know what critics will say about the film. They will hate it. Sometimes I think because their critical lens doesn’t allow for them to have a good time. Thankfully, I can sit back and enjoy things if it makes me laugh. This film has a decent amount of laughs, some are very good. Taran Killam as a semi villainous principal is one of the highlights as well. Its an uneven film at times but definitely was not as bad as I thought it would be. The Hart/Haddish pairing worked. I didn’t get the going into the MMA gym to learn thing, could have done without that entirely.
I guess I’m pretty content because I had a good time. I guess a few things have to go your way to enjoy this. First, you can’t have that haughty film critic attitude because then I think you won’t allow yourself to enjoy it. Also you might have to like or at least feel indifferent to Kevin Hart’s style because you know exactly what you will get with him. This isn’t here to make any end of the year lists, but the thing is I’m not exactly tired of Haddish or Hart yet so I’m game for more.
